Trees should be removed if they are old or diseased so that they do not fall and damage automobiles or buildings. As they age, some trees become hollow which weakens them. This makes them vulnerable to strong winds during storms that break off limbs or topple entire trees. Some species, like silver maple, are prone to breakage from high winds.
Small Tree Removal
A small tree can be removed fairly easily by sawing it off at the base. We can usually control the direction in which the tree will fall. If necessary, we will attach ropes to make sure it does not fall in a direction that will cause damage to nearby structures. Once the tree is down, we will cut it up. Smaller diameter (Less than a foot) pieces will go into our chipped and be reduced to small wood chips. Larger diameter pieces will be cut into manageably sized pieces. We can haul away both the chips and the larger wood pieces away if you desire.
Removing Larger Trees
Larger trees need to be taken down in pieces so they do not damager nearby objects. In this case we started at the upper left on the tree. Note the attached cable to keep it away from the building when it comes down. By starting towards the top and working our way down, we can safely remove the tree one section at a time. If the area around the tree is fairly open, we can simply let these sections drop to the ground. If not, we will use a crane to hold them and lay them down in a controlled manner. When removing trees which are very close to buildings, our sections need to smaller, which takes more time and makes the job more expensive.

When we take down a large tree and have big sections, we use a skid-steer to remove them. Note the mats have been placed on the ground so the skid-steer tracks do not damage the lawn.
Down Tree Removal
We also remove downed trees. Here’s a chokecherry tree that was dead and blown down by the wind. When we arrived on the scene, we trimmed off most of the branches and ran them through our chipper, which can handle pieces up to a foot in diameter. For sections larger than that, like the trunk, we cut them up into manageable sized pieces so that we can haul them away. After that we clean up all the mess. Since this was a small tree, we could easily remove the pieces by hand.
