People usually get their trees trimmed for one of three reasons:
- Aesthetics: Sometimes a tree becomes overgrown and looks unruly. We can trim it back to a size that looks appropriate.
- Remove dead or diseased branches: We can cut out any unsightly dead wood. If you have dying branches, removing them may prevent the disease from spreading to the rest of the tree. Sometimes insects such as tent caterpillars can damage portions of a tree. Branches which rub against each other should be removed. Otherwise they can damage each other.
- Safety: Sometimes trees grow branches over houses, above garages or near electric power lines. These can be safety issues, especially when the tree is old and not as structurally sound as it once was. Also, tree limbs should not extend into public sidewalks such that they impede pedestrian traffic. Branches must be removed if they obscure traffic lights or road signs.
Trimming to Improve a Tree’s Appearance
River birch tree before and after trimming
The first image above shows a tree that had grown taller than the homeowner desired. Its shape had also become a little ragged. We took a photograph and they marked how much they wanted it trimmed back. The second photo shows the tree after it had been trimmed. It is much shorter, and also has a much more attractive shape.
Removing Dead and Diseased Branches
Diseased branches should be removed so the disease does not spread to the rest of the tree. Dead branches are unsightly, and they may attract insects. These should be removed to keep the rest of the tree healthy. Any branches which cross should be removed. Otherwise, these branches will rub against each other when the wind blows, damaging the bark on each limb. As shown in the graphic, branches that form very sharp angles are generally not very strong. These should be removed.

Trimming Trees for Safety
We often trim trees so they will not damage cars, garages or buildings if a limb should break and fall. This is especially important with older trees that may have some internal decay. In the image. Jose is about to saw off a limb that extends over a house. There is a rope, barely visible in the photo, that will hold the limb once he cuts it. After it’s cut, it will be gently lowered to the ground so the building isn’t damaged.
People can also be harmed by falling trees or limbs. On April 23, 2022 a nine year-old boy and an eight year-old girl were killed in Owen County, A dead tree was blown over by strong winds and hit them. Don’t let this happen on your property.
When to Trim Your Trees
We can and do trim trees at any time of the year. We’re busiest during the warmer months. It seems that everyone forgets about their trees once they lose their leaves and the weather turns cold. Winter is actually the best time of year to have your trees trimmed. They’re dormant during the winter, so the trimming doesn’t cause as much stress. It’s also easier to see what branches need to be removed when there are no leaves present. Also, we’re less busy, so we can get to your job sooner.
Trimming Oak Trees
Arborists recommend not trimming oak trees during the middle of summer. There is a disease called oak wilt that is caused by a fungus. The fungus is spread by beetles that feed on tree sap. Trimming trees can cause sap to ooze out, attracting these beetles which could have the fungus on them.

I had 8 European Hornbeams that were 30-35 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Jose worked all day and did a fantastic job. When finished the trees were perfectly shaped and trimmed to be of equal size.
